"Leave No Stone Unturned." - Chatting with Members of the Choir's Kwame Michael Remy

I would like you to meet Kwame Michael Remy. Kwame was recently seen in Members of the Choir at the Chain Theatre written by Evan Edwards and Directed by Rick Hamilton. Kwame has performed in the National and International Tours of Jesus Christ Superstar (Simon Zealotes), Smokey Joe's Cafe (Victor/ Adrian/ Michael), Five Guys Named Moe (Eat Moe), Solid Gold Soul (Man 1), and And the World Goes Round (Standby). Kwame has also performed regionally with Diamond Head Theatre, Cape Fear Regional Theatre, The ZACH, Columbia Stages, Cultural Arts Playhouse, and Oregon Cabaret Theatre among many others! I am very thankful to feature such a talented artist!

How old were you when you knew you wanted a career in the performing arts?

I was at the tender age of either 3 or 4 when I knew I wanted a career in the performing arts.

Where did you study? Are there any mentors who helped shape you into the artist you are today?

I studied at Five Towns College. I have been blessed to have many mentors and educators who poured into me. Among them, there are a few that stand out: my 5th-grade teacher Mrs. Stowers, my High School Music teacher Mr. Kenneth M. Brown, and my drama club leader Alie Roberson. Mrs. Stowers noticed I had a special aptitude for Acting and Music and encouraged my Mom to sign me up for performing arts classes; Mr. Brown was a dynamic teacher that taught me how to not only use my voice but also of the importance of working with integrity; and Mrs. Roberson is where I was able to develop my acting skills in my formative years. I am so grateful for the many lessons I have learned from my mentors.

Congratulations on Members of the Choir! Evan Edwards is a true gem in this industry and it is so exciting to see new works come to light like this. What about Members of the Choir excited you?

I was most excited for the opportunity to dive into the worlds of these characters. In this day and age, it is a rarity to work on a piece written by a black playwright with a predominantly black cast of actors. Evan is truly talented and a clever writer. I am happy that his work is being brought to the light.

You have worked all over the world. Are there any shows, performances, or moments in your wonderful career that stick out and are near and dear to your heart?

There are a few shows/performances that are near and dear to my heart. One is performing in the pacific premiere of Kinky Boots in Hawaii. Not only did I get to play a dream role, but the message of that show is also so powerful and universal. My two favorite performances to date are performing on the 60th Annual Grammy Awards with Sam Smith and performing for Pope John Paul ll at the Vatican.

What advice would you give any young aspiring artist?

I would tell any young aspiring artist to do it because you love it. I would also say to study your craft. Love yourself, and learn as much as you can about other aspects of the industry. My sound advice is to leave no stone unturned.
